Telangana State Fish – Chenna striata (Murrel)

Fisheries sector plays importance role in livelihood to fisher folk and provides nutritional food to public. Wanaparthy district is having potential for fisheries activities and fish production. This district having (960) tanks and (5) Reservoirs which are potential for fisheries development. In addition to the abundant water sources in this district the River Krishna and its backwater is embedded in the district and resulting natural fishery wealth which providing livelihood to local fishermen. The Wanaparthy District is high potential for fish culture most of the tanks are canalfed and perennial in nature.

1. Reservoir particulars:

1. Fisheries Co-operative Societies: Fisheries Department is organizing registered societies in the villages where feasibility is available for the welfare of fishing community in the district.

• Welfare Schemes:

Pradhan Manthri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): Under this scheme, the Fisheries Department will give permissions and financial assistance as per the eligibility to the farmers who are interested to construct new fish ponds/ fish seed rearing ponds in their own patta lands which are not suitable for agriculture.

Aquaculture Permissions: The Department is giving private farmers to construct fish culture ponds in their own patta lands for aquaculture purpose.

Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS): The government is giving Rs.5 lakhs ex-gratia to the family members for accidental death of society members. Rs.5.00 lakhs for permanent disability and Rs.2.50 for partial disability.

Eligibility Criteria: Registered fishers are eligible under GAIS scheme.

Fish Seed Stocking programme: The Government has introduced 100% free Fish Seed Stocking Programme in the Reservoirs / Departmental Tanks and Gramapanchayat tanks for optimum utilisation of the water sources for maximum fish production for eking the lively hood of fishermen in the district.

Fish production: In Wanaparthy District is being produced through Culture Fisheries and Capture Fisheries. The main sources for culture Fisheries are (960) irrigation tanks and (5) Reservoirs. And also, about 83 members from Aquaculture ponds covering with an extent of about 137.25 ha. in the district.  The Capture fisheries comes from river Krishna and Srisailam Backwater.

Commonly harvested fish species: The following fish/prawn species are cultured and harvested from the tanks, reservoirs, backwaters, and Krishna River in Wanaparthy district.

Disposal of Tanks: All Water received Tanks/Reservoirs are being leased out in favour of the Fishermen Cooperative Societies concerned as per the rentals fixed by the authority on nominal lease basis for every year to get livelihood of fisher folk in the district.

Issue of License in Reservoirs: Every year the fisheries department is giving fishing licences to fisher folk on nominal basis who resides in the vicinity of Srisailam Backwaters and Priyadarshini Jurala Reservoir in the district for their livelihood.
